What is a 24-hour Holter Monitor Device?

Holter monitor is a medical device which makes the record and storage of heart’s electrical activity in the span of 24 hours. This test and device have been named after inventor of this device namely Norman Holter. This device detects abnormal heart rhythm; it is particularly suitable for diagnosing arrhythmias i.e. irregular heartbeat.

Although it provides less detailed information than the electrocardiogram because fewer electrodes comprise of the Holter which his able to record heart rate continuously over 24 hours. It is also used to record 48 hours. In special cases, such as the study of malignant arrhythmias, a chip is placed on the skin (subcutaneous implantable Holter) and heart rate records are obtained up to 6 months.

What is Holter test?

During the test, the patient will carry the Holter, which consists of a small device the size of a mobile phone, typically attached to a belt tight around the waist, and connected to electrodes (conductive patches) engaged in the chest for a day. It operates on battery or batteries.

The Holter records up to 100,000 cardiac cycles over 24 hours compared to 40 or 50 cardiac cycles which electrocardiogram is able to record. Once past 24 hours, you will disconnect the device. The information has been stored in the device and it will be transferred to a computer. These records will allow the doctor to detect possible cardiac arrhythmia.

What is a Holter electrocardiogram?

•    It allows to evaluate heart function continuously for the daily life of the person.
•    It diagnoses numerous kinds of arrhythmias.
•    It checks if particular symptoms such as palpitation, dizziness, syncope or chest pain are caused by heart disease.
•    It evaluates treatment with pacemaker or medication to treat arrhythmias.

During the test, the patient can lead a normal life once Holter electrodes have been placed. At first, it may seem a bit weighty, but the cables should be under patient’s clothes, and when the patient gets used to carry the device and he/she realizes it is there. The patient cannot shower and must avoid sweating so that the electrodes attached to the skin does not loosen.

It is important that during the test, the patient remembers to write down in a book all the activities (eating, toileting, climbing stairs, walking) he/she does and feels the symptoms as well as the exact time of occurrence. Sleep is advisable to do with the up position to prevent the cables from arising. There is no risk of Holter 24-hours test since the person undergoing the test does not receive any power or radiation.
